Youngsters and adults alike look like being in tune with the future after visiting Cranbrook Town Band open day on Saturday.

The musicians took over the main chamber at the council offices to promote their new youth band, which is expected to begin full rehearsals in September.

Band chairman, Chris Cannings said it had been “successful”, with youngsters and parents listening to performances, talking to members and trying out instruments.

“It was the first time we’d done something like this. It was a great afternoon,” he said.

The founding of a youth band was a condition of a National Lottery grant of £54,000 to buy new instruments for the town band. Already a group of children at Cranbrook Primary school, beginners to brass bands take lunchtime lessons each Wednesday from band member Robin Traves. Two Benenden boys have said they are interested in joining

The open day was also an opportunity for the band to promote its new music CD and tape. It includes such favourites as Gershwin, a song from Les Miserables, the Barber of Seville and William Rimmer’s Ravenswood.

The recording also features A Kentish Suite, specifically written for the town band and recalling Canterbury Cathedral, Scotney Castle, Lamberhurst, and Cranbrook’s white windmill. Copies are available from band members and from Bangham Records in the High Street.

Cranbrook Town Band hold an open rehearsal in the borough council officers on Saturday.
